How to Love

I am by no means saying that I like lil Wayne. Actually I think that most of his lyrics are terrible and I would never endorse what he has to say. But I was caught off guard by one of his newest songs. It is called How to Love. In the song he is singing about a girl who has been with a lot of guys and is trying to find love in all the wrong places. He believes that he has all the answers for her and he can show her how to love again. Here is an excerpt from the song...

Once again I think it is interesting how culture is searching, calling out for something that we cannot completely find in this world. This girls cry is the cry of some many people. They have looked in all the wrong places trying to find love and have been greatly disappointed. They want so bad to know that someone cares for them, thinks they are the greatest thing in the world, and that they mean something. We get some of that in a marriage relationship but yet even then something small but nagging is still not there. So many search and search and really never find an answer to this question. Really what this song is saying is that in order to love we need to know how to love. Lil Wayne thinks that he is the answer for this girl in the corner, but I think we can look somewhere else.

There is a verse in 1 John chapter 4 that really tells us how to love. The verse says, "We love because he (Jesus) first loved us." I like to call the book of 1 John the book of love. John is one my favorite disciples. In his gospel, the book of John, he calls himself "the disciple whom Jesus loved". Was he just a person that thought only Jesus loved him or was he onto something deeper. I think he was catching on to something that we need to catch onto today. You see when we look at the love of Jesus and let that become who we are, then we know how to love. He really becomes the example to us. His care for us, his faithfulness, his grace, mercy, his willingness to die for us, and so many other ways we can see that. In 1 John, John says that God is love. We cannot describe God as love, he is love. John goes on to say in chapter 4 if we have the love of God in us then we should be able to love others. We should be able to show the same kind of grace, mercy, care, concern, and willingness to do anything for that other person because we saw him do that in our life.

So the questions is how do you love? Well you have to know love to give love. The only way and the best way to do that is to look at the most pure love anyone could give, and that is in Jesus. He is the true example that shows us how to love. That love shows us how to love our family, our friends, our spouse, and others. Until we have that love a part of our lives, we will continue to search for something that cannot be obtained. 

If you have been searching for love, go back to the one who loved you before you were born. He cares about you as an individual more than anyone ever could on this earth. When you have that in your heart then you are truly able to love someone else.
