Broken Walls
I am so excited for the start of the football season. Big hits, big plays, and my boys the Bears are taking the field. When I watch those guys I wonder what got them to that place. Well they have talent and ability but I think a lot of them would say one word, Discipline. Everyday they would get up put in some reps, pumping iron, and looking at game film. They know that they need to put in the hard work in order to succeed in the game. They can't just show up and expect to do well.
The same can be true of our lives. In the book of Proverbs there is a verse that talks about discipline and compares it to a large city wall. Proverbs is a book of wisdom. It has short sayings that are not necessarily truth, but they are wise sayings that we should all consider.
Proverbs 25:28 says, "Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self control." In old times, the city needed the walls in order to protect the people. Without it they were vulnerable and unable to defend themselves. I think the same can be said of us. We need discipline in our life. Discipline in our christian lives can be found in prayer, reading our bible, fasting, and other things. We need these things to stay spiritually fit and to maintain the walls of our lives. When we decide to leave these things we are leaving ourselves open and vulnerable just like a broken wall around a city. But just like discipline in football, it is hard work. It takes time and effort to crack open our bibles and prayer. When we put in this hard work though we become strong people. We are better able to resist the enemy and stay strong.
So what does your wall around your life look like? Is it strong and able to take a beating? Or is it weak with lots of holes for the enemy to be able to enter your life? Pick up your Bible today and see what it has to say. Maybe start in one of my favorite books John or maybe look at a great book in James. Whatever it is check it out and will allow your life to be strong in face of the enemy and the storms of life.
