How Could You Leave Us!

This past week a new album from NF just dropped called Therapy Session. I downloaded the album looking forward to listening to it in my car. While listening to his music I came across a song called, "How Could You Leave Us". In this song NF describes how his mother was so addicted to drugs that she never had time for him and eventually her life was taken because of her addiction. Her is a couple lines from his song.

"I don't get it Mom, don't you wanna watch your babies grow? I guess pills are more important, all you have to say is NO. But you won't do it will you? You gon' keep popping 'till them pills kill you!" "I got a picture in my room, and it kills me. But I don't I need a picture of my mom, I need the real thing." "What you don't understand and what you're not grasping, I was nothing but a kid who couldn't understand it, I ain't gon' say that I forgive you 'cause it hasn't happened."

He felt abandoned, forgotten, and throughout the song has a haunting chorus that asks the question, Why did you leave us?

As I listen to the song I began to cry (I don't think I have ever cried listening to a song). I think I was crying because I felt his pain and I began to think of all the students who had parents who had abandoned them. Then I began to think of all the times people have left us when they promised to stay and be there for us. Maybe it was a boyfriend, girlfriend, a close friend, family, etc. At some point they said they would be there and they were not and in our hearts we cried out why did you leave me?

I love those whom God has placed in my life but they are imperfect, and they will eventually fail me. In those times I am reminded of a God who loves me so much and has promised me to stay close. Deuteronomy says, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."  He is always there, he has never forsaken me, and we can put our trust in Him.

I realize that we all have gone through these difficult times. I understand especially for those of you who have never met your maternal parents or if they have left you, how much pain that brings. Know that you have a heavenly father who loves you so much. It is ok to ask why did you leave, but know that He has never left. He has been there all along.

  1. I had a similar reaction when I listened to it for the first time last week...teared up during the chorus and lost it during the outro. He's the most transparent artist I've ever heard. #NFrealmusic
