Mirror Mirror on the Wall

My wife and I heard a song a couple of days ago and it made me really think. The song is called "Mirror" by lil Wayne. Once again I am not a supporter of lil Wayne or his music, but I think looking at the lyrics of the music gives us a glimpse of our culture and of ourselves. Here is an excerpt from the first verse.

You looking at me but I'm looking through you
I see the blood in your eyes
I see the love in disguise
I see the pain hidden in your pride
I see you're not satisfied
And I don't see nobody else
I see myself I'm looking at the

Mirror on the wall, here we are again

We all have moments we truly look at ourselves, even the most popular and so called successful people look at themselves. He was looking past his outward appearance and what he has done and he was looking at what I call our true self. His true self is not satisfied, hides his pain with pride, doesn't really love truly, and really is not pleased with who he is. 

I think if we were honest we would all say there is a true self inside of all of us. We see our faults and failures. We try not to look at the mirror but God's word is a lot like a mirror. It shows us our true self in the light of God's Holiness.

James 1:22-24 "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like."

Let us not just look at God's word and walk away unchanged. Let us not come to church expecting God not to do something in our own lives. We should always be in a state of change. So today look at yourself in the mirror and look at your true self. Ask God to change who you are into the man or women he wants you to be.
