Double Agent
There is a video game that came out a couple of years ago. It was called double agent. In past games you were splinter cell a secret agent sent out to get the bad guys. Well in this game you are serving both the good guys you were sworn to and the bad guys you thought you would never be a part of. This is how the name double agent comes about. Some call it riding the fence, wearing a mask, and any other way that describes a person who wants both parties but eventually will have to make a choice to whom they will follow and serve.
Sometimes we act like double agents. Serving two masters at the same time. We think that the other will never find out and we can do whatever we want. Well we cannot serve the world and serve God at the same time. It just does not work. Jesus even says in Matthew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (NIV) I think we can make the conclusion that we can put anything in that space that money takes. You cannot serve both God and pride. You cannot serve both God and lust. You cannot serve both God and ... the world.
I think the verse that gets me the most when it comes to being a double agent is Colossians 2:20, "Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules?" (NIV) So why do we? I think for some of us we think that God is just a God full of rules and no fun. Maybe we feel like that if we completely submit then we have to change who we are. I think it boils down to one word... trust. We are unwilling to trust God and his direction in our life. We think that we know what think is best. That is far from the truth. We need his direction and guidance in our life.
So what should we do if we find ourselves to be double agents. The word of God says that we need to die to the flesh (Gal 5:24) and we need to allow God to transform our minds towards him so that we don't long for the things of this world (Rom 12:2) . God does a work in our lives but it takes us being pro active against the world to really make a difference.
If you think that living for this world will result in good things just look at 1 John 2:17. It says "The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever". This world is going to pass and it's desires, so why not serve the God who will be with you for all eternity. It is time that you jump off the fence, take off the mask, stop being a double agent, and decide who you will serve. Will you serve the desires of this world that will eventually pass away and bring you nothing, or will you serve a loving God who knows you better than yourself and who promises eternal life to you. The choice lies with you, but I pray you decide to trust in God who has always been faithful to me. Don't wait, make the choice today.
